CityMesh: A Decentralized Fallback Network #
CityMesh is a wireless mesh network protocol that is designed to keep people connected when traditional, centralized networks fail. Centralized networks often rely on both physical and logical single points of failure, such as internet exchanges, fiber backhauls, amplifier shacks, and T1 ISPs. When considering modern applications that are reliant on cloud infrastructure, these points of failure almost always lie along the critical path.
Natural disasters, attacks on infrastructure, misconfiguration or equipment failure, or mass censorship events inevitably lead to a degradation or complete failure of popular applications due to this centralization.
We propose a solution that takes advantage of the millions of already-deployed Wi-Fi access points that are ubiquitous across metropolitan residential and commercial locales.
